Home Tour: A West Village Apartment

West Village apartments are notorious for being small. It is often the trade off you make to live in one of New York’s most quintessential neighborhoods with cobblestoned streets and Federal-style townhouses. A small apartment doesn’t mean sacrificing style or even function. Small spaces are the perfect place to make more bold interior design choices or to use wallpaper.

After months of searching, finding this apartment spot was pure luck. It was a true one bedroom that was up only one flight of stairs and it had a dishwasher.

An apartment that mixes preppy and Moroccan decor elements with a view of one of the West Village’s most beautiful mansions. My favorite part? The what could have been an awkward nook in the living space that was made into a pretty focal point with wallpaper and loveseat that fit so perfectly into the space it felt custom-made.

Despite the living space, kitchen and hall all sharing a small space, it doesn’t feel too crowded. The trick? Choosing furniture that serves multiple purposes. A rattan cart sits in the space between the kitchen and the seating area acting as another surface in the living room or to hold extra pitchers near the kitchen. I love this space for burning candles, displaying flowers or as a drop spot for keys. A swivel chair and a rolling storage chest provides more flexibility for seating and storage in a small space.

New York apartments are a place to get creative. Don’t let what a piece of furniture is made for stop you from moving it around and trying it for a different purpose. In the bedroom, a TV console acts as a nightstand providing a focal point when paired with a vintage mirror and extra storage.
